Why facilitation? Team-working can be really effective. But truth is, many teams tend to flounder if left entirely to their own devices. People get distracted, diverted or lost in the detail, paying lots of attention to what has to be done – with little (if any) awareness of how they’re going about doing it.
To get great results, teams need good group process. This is where the facilitation role comes in. Asking good questions, clarifying, focusing on goals, summarising and making a team’s work easier by structuring and guiding patterns of participation – all crucial in all team settings.
Anyone can learn how to facilitate, but integrating facilitation into your leadership approach is a terrific opportunity for leaders to encourage more collaboration, involvement and accountability within their teams while inspiring more focused activity, more constructive conversations and more harmonious, creative and supportive relationships.
Facilitative leadership is a set of tools and a style of personal influence every team can benefit from. As a facilitator, you’re a powerful model for skilful listening, constructive conversation and collaborative problem-solving. The intent is to achieve maximum involvement, creativity and commitment to the task at hand, while channelling conflict and disagreement constructively.
Most people you lead want to be involved and consulted, not coerced. We’ve known for ages how this raises motivation, commitment and satisfaction levels – and stimulates enhanced productivity.
With its focus on asking not telling, engaging and guiding rather than controlling or directing, pulling together rather than competing, a facilitated approach gives leaders a new way of relating – of developing your team to direct themselves rather than lead from the top.
This two-day, hands-on, practice-based clinic is packed with robust models, roadmaps and a comprehensive array of track-tested tools that lay a solid foundation to master what matters most for sound team facilitation in a wide range of settings – team meetings, strategic planning, problem-solving and decision-making sessions, training, community consultation, team-building, classroom teaching and more.

Excellent content with a great take-away guide that gave me new tools for my toolbox. I plan to use some with my teams and colleagues. Bill you did great. There’s more to facilitation than routine meeting mechanics. It’s a philosophy about how to help groups navigate their way through what they have to do in ways that maximise contributions, create cohesion, harness collective ideas and energies – and, ideally, have a bit of fun along the way.
Facilitating effectively requires an enabling, empowering, disciplined-but-relaxed approach. In this highly practical program we’ll explore how you can help to open minds so people can see the connections between tasks and the team, in an enjoyable, constructive and liberating way – not an overly directive, ‘do-this-now’ style.
Facilitative leaders work behind-the-scenes to get results for their teams. They work in partnership with them to create a climate where they help them discover for themselves what to do, where people are encouraged and entrusted to take action. See our Article: Why Facilitation is Fundamental to Leadership.
I learned some great strategies for encouraging participation within a group from each member, and also how to be an effective facilitator.
The hands on activities and taking turns to facilitate were very useful and the facilitation guide is an excellent resource to flick back through and refresh. Thank you so much again for the two days. I found them so valuable and have learned a great deal.
